Root and stem (stalk) of white cabbage

The root of white cabbage is taproot, strongly branching. The main part of it is located in the soil layer at a depth of 40 cm, individual roots can penetrate to a depth of 1 m.

The cabbage stalk, that is, the stalk, in the first year of growth of cabbage – short, thick, fleshy. In the second year, it straightens and becomes cylindrical.

If a two-year-old stalk is kept during the winter, and planted in the spring, it will take root, and from the buds shoots with flowers are formed, which then turn into fruits with seeds.

Fresh finely chopped cabbage stalks can be not only a good component of soups and vegetable side dishes, but also an appropriate addition to salads. It is important to pay attention to what kind of cabbage is used for cooking and what kind of stalk it has. In other words, if you see a black rim on the stalk when choosing cabbage (and dark or red spots on the leaves), then it is better not to buy such cabbage, since color markers indicate the presence of an excess of nitrates in the cabbage.
